Sinakulo (Way of the Cross). On Good Friday, parishes all over Tayabas perform the Sinakulo or Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the 'Patio' of Minor Basilica of Saint Michael Archangel, a street presentation or a stage enactment of Christ?s arrest, mocking, trial, painful way to Calvary (Golgotha), crucifixion, and death on the cross. Verses are recited and sang while colorful costumes reminiscent of SUSI ng TAYABAS are worn accordingly.
There are also actual flagellations and nailings to the cross of penitents as expressions of evotion and penance. Performances are superb and have been critically acclaimed even by the most respected Filipino artists and thespians. Even non-devotees are observed to have been moved to tears by the ceremony. And all these are done under the scorching sun of the Philippines' notorious summers!

CALABANGA, Camarines Sur—Owing to its rich religious culture and famous image of Amang Hinulid (Holy Sepulcher) that is believed to be miraculous, this town enjoys an influx of thousands of tourists during the Lenten Week. The crowd drawer is the Amang Hinulid, which thousands of devotees from different parts of the country visit from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday. During the two-day Lenten holiday alone, the continuous flow of thousands of barefoot pilgrims, walking shoulder-to-shoulder along the national road 20 km from Naga City going to and out of this town, is a sight to see. The Amang Hinulid has earned popularity among its devotees through word-to-mouth accounts of miracles since the 19th century. Undocumented accounts of the image's Aside from the famous image of Amang Hinulid, the colorful mix of combined pagan rituals and modern-day art forms practiced every year on Lenten week makes an interesting discovery. One would witness the pagan ritual of cleansing performed by hooded male and female penitents in groups of five. The hooded shirtless male penitents-adorned with leaves, flowers and ringlets made of crawling wild flowering vine cadena-de-amor-make their rhythmic moves in the streets of the town towards the sea to bathe, a cleansing ritual rooted from their ancestors. While the hooded male penitents do the act of penance by flogging their backs with chains and bamboo whip, the hooded women penitents called "sayos" make their rounds around town, asking for alms that they donate to the church. Dressed in black and face covered, the sayos' identities are mysteriously concealed from the public as they ask alms in favor of the Church on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to pay for their sins. Unlike in other places in Bicol, the vanishing practice of pabasa or the oral Bicol chant of the Passion of Christ performed for 24 hours is still a dominant practice in numerous houses here beginning Holy Wednesday to Maundy Thursday. Thirteen years ago, another Holy Week event came into being, which has now become a tradition here through years of religious observance. It is becoming the second crowd drawer of this town during the Lenten week. In this Bicol town, the "Stations of the Cross" is a tableaux of costumed live mannequins performing the scenes from the "Garden of Gethsemane" to "Jesus' Crucifixion." The interactive street play of the "Passion of Christ", which is performed as an alternative to the "Seven Last Words" Mass, has been engaging since a group of parishioners, which a former parish priest led, initiated the tradition. Involving a cast of at least 100 performers, the street play is staged in several locations in the town and runs for 17 hours on Good Friday. Catholics here also practice the same Easter observance of "Soledad," "Salubong" and The Resurrection. But what made the Lenten tradition here distinct from other towns in Bicol is that religious tourists continue to visit Calabanga to renew their devotion. http://news.inquirer.net/express/html_output/20060416-72657.xml.html Photograph by: Biyahero-JOEL DACUDAO

CLARK FREEPORT — At least 21 balloons from 14 countries are set to fly Clark skies in the upcoming 12th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF) to be held from February 7-10 at the ADAC of the Philippine Air Force here.
Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president Liberato Laus said this year’s 12th PIHBF is a highlight of the “Clarksiyahan” — a “packet of activities” to be held from February 8- 10 at the CDC Parade Grounds.
Clarksiyahan, Laus furthered, would also feature a drag race, quiz bee, inter-school street dancing, PEP squad competition, locators’ product selling, bikini open, and the Johnny Walker rave party and fashion show.
Joi Roa, president of Air Ads and committee chairman of the PIHBF, said of the 21 balloons, 19 are flown by foreign pilots from 13 countries while the other two are flown by Filipino pilots.
Roa assured spectators that this year’s event would be highlighted by new and colorful balloons which include two novelty balloons — an octopus from Japan and a tiger from Germany.
The pilots participating in the event come from the Philippines, Sweden, the United States, Hungary, Thailand, Malaysia, Germany, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Finland, Japan, Switzerland, England, and South Korea.
Also, the event would feature four paragliders, three from Malaysia and one from France, who are flying thrice daily for the whole duration of the event, Roa said.
Aside from the paragliders, Roa said planes and a chopper from Kuala Lumpur and Thailand would be flown into the country to participate in the four-day event.
Other new highlights of this year’s PIHBF are carnival rides and ATVs (all- terrain vehicles) where spectators would have the chance to ride an ATV in a dirt area that would also serve as an exhibit venue.
Laus said the 12th PIHBF is expected to outdo last year’s event, which hoarded more than 100,000 spectators.
He added that reports reaching his office revealed that last year’s balloon fiesta has doubled by more than 100 percent based on the more than 100,000 gate receipts collected by event organizers. (RGN)

While other theme parks take you for a spin, Ocean Adventure, the country’s first and only marine park, puts some sense back into fun with its informative animal shows and programs.Only Ocean Adventure can combine entertainment and education with the help of friendly false killer whales, intelligent dolphins and comic sea lions.
Be amazed as false killer whales and dolphins do aerial acrobatics with grace and power in their all-natural lagoon home. While they zip and spin in the air, kids and adults alike learn more about these astounding animals – how they communicate, swim or dive with ease and how they are leading Ocean Adventure’s efforts to protect the ocean and all the animals that live in it.
South American Sea Lions, on the other hand, are the resident clowns at Ocean Adventure. But while providing tons of laughs during their program, these witty, wily and sometimes stubborn animals show their trainers who’s the boss when it comes to environmental protection. See them balance beach balls on their noses and put environmentally-destructive plastic bottles in their respective trash receptacles. They also play Sherlock Holmes with their trainers and hunt down environmental misfits. You’ll likewise be astonished when they deliver their environmental message in their own tongue!
Aside from animal shows, Ocean Adventure also offer animal encounter programs for children aged 8 and up. The 45minute whale encounter program, the first and only open-water interactive program in the country, lets kids meet a whale eye-to-eye, hand-to-fin and feettofluke.
Under proper supervision, participants can ride on, touch, feed and hug their new friend while learning more about their habitat, behavior and environmental importance.
For certified divers, Ocean Adventure also offers a chance to get deeper with false killer whales with its ‘Dive With The Whales’ program. The adventure starts with a personalized introduction of the individual whales you’ll be meeting beneath the lagoon. Divers learn more about their personality, behavior, physiology and uncanny abilities underwater. Then, its 30 minutes of bliss as divers touch, swim and explore their underwater world with them.
For those who want to work with animals, Ocean Adventure offers interested parties the opportunity to become trainers for a day. You’ll help prepare food, participate in training sessions and receive personalized instructions on how to train and care for animals at Ocean Adventure.
What more can you ask for? Only Ocean Adventure combines fun, education and thrilling close encounters with animals from the deep.

THE SAN FERNANDO GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL <<< VIDEO for you!
The San Fernando lantern industry evolved from the Giant Lantern Festival of San Fernando. The festival, which is held every December, finds its root in Bacolor where a much simpler activity was held. Following the transfer of the provincial capital from Bacolor to San Fernando in August 1904, this parul event followed as well. “Ligligan Parul” was said to have started in San Fernando in the year 1904. But some say that the “Ligligan Parul” did not happen immediately after the transfer and in fact began in 1908.
2007 Giant Lantern Festival Winner: Brgy. Telebastagan
This predecessor of the modern day Giant Lantern Festival was actually a religious activity which we know today as “lubenas.” The lanterns measured just two feet in diameter, a far cry from the fifteen feet that we see today. These were created in each barrio from bamboo and other locally available materials. During the nine-day novena before Christmas, which coincided with the simbang gabi from December 16 to 24, these paruls were brought around each barrio in procession to their visita. Before the midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, the lanterns were brought to the town church together with the barrio patrons.
2nd Runner-up: Brgy. San Nicolas
This tradition gradually evolved as the lanterns became bigger and the designs more intricate. Later, one big lantern was made for each barrio, which was created through a cooperative effort. Each resident contributed to its construction, from the concept and design to the materials and labor. In the end, these lanterns became a symbol of unity for the barrios.
3rd Runner-up: Brgy. San Felipe
It was in the year 1931 that electricity was introduced to the San Fernando lantern, thus sparking the birth of the first Giant Lantern Festival. The added illusion of dancing lights highlighted the bright colors and intricate designs of these Giant Lanterns. At this time, the lights were controlled by individual switches that were turned on and off following the beat of the music. The barangays of Del Pilar, Sta. Lucia and San Jose were among the first barangays to participate in the festival.
According to another version claimed by old folks, the Giant Lantern Festival started during the time of President Manuel L. Quezon. At that time, President Quezon was trying to make Pampanga a model province. In fact, Quezon made Arayat his resting place and converted the legendary Mount Arayat into a tourist resort. As a show of gratitude to Quezon, the people of San Fernando held a Christmas lantern contest to honor the first family. Quezon himself donated the prize for this lantern contest which was personally awarded to the winner by First Lady Aurora Aragon Quezon.
